The new summer RBI baseball league got their inaugural season underway last Saturday at Colina del Sol Park’s baseball field.
The league is comprised of mostly inner-city youth as part of the reviving baseball in the inner city initiative.
The new league gives 13 to 18 year old inner city youngsters and softball girls an opportunity to compete after the completions of their high school and little league seasons.
They can now continue their baseball and softball pursuits without the financial price tag associated with travel baseball.
“This is a totally free baseball and softball league and we still have room for a few more,” said league president Richard Curry. He added, “We had a good turnout today. The action was awesome and we had a couple of real competitive games. The girls eleven and under softball girls game was the best of the day!”
Athletic initiative joined forces in cooperation with the San Diego Padres and San Diego’s Hall of Champions to bring RBI to the communities of East and Southeast.
Thanks to the Padres grant of $2,500 the league was able to secure the fields and get some of the needed equipment for the first RBI summer league.
“I want to go as far as I can with baseball, it is my favorite sport. College, pro, whatever, I think this league can really help me get better. Today’s game was a lot of fun,” Pitcher Jordan Jackson said.
RBI will be playing every Saturday until late August. For more information contact (619) 786-0232 or visit Facebook.com/athleticinitiative.
