It was a beautiful day for hundreds of senior citizens, or as they liked to be called, “Seasoned Citizens”, of ages ranging between those in their 70s, 80s, and 90s who gathered on Friday, June 19, 2026, to celebrate Juneteenth at the George Stevens Senior Center in San Diego, CA. The room was buzzing with laughter, soft tears and many happy hellos between the people who don’t get to see each other too often. They had plates that were amazing, including fried fish and baked chicken served with baked beans, a roll and salad, along with the table-side service from the volunteers who showed such care as if they were being paid.

A highlight of the celebration was the presentation of a proclamation from the San Diego City Council officially recognizing June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth Day in the City of San Diego by Councilmember Henry L. Foster III.

The event featured an array of entertainment, including San Diego’s own Dauché, who served as DJ and commentator for the celebration. Guests also enjoyed performances by the live band Sound Collage, talented vocalists, and a moving theatrical presentation provided by the Old Globe. The volunteers brought the play to life as a satire about a white woman selling hair products to black women. The Buffalo Soldiers San Diego Chapter who come out every year performed a ceremonial colors march, adding to the significance of the occasion. A wonderful way of starting the celebration of the Juneteenth weekend!
